The Reactions of Photosynthesis Section 8-3 The Reactions of Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis Question While performing an experiment using green spinach leaves, Jamie identifies chlorophyll and pigments of several other colors. What is the most accurate conclusion Jamie can make about the pigment in spinach leaves? Chlorophyll decomposes to reveal other pigments. Chlorophyll passes light energy to other pigments in the leaves. Chlorophyll appears in higher concentrations than other pigments Chlorophyll absorbs light while other pigments reflect light.

Light-dependent reactions Requires Light Occurs in thylakoid membrane of a chloroplast. Uses Light and H2O to produce oxygen gas Also converts ADP and NADP+ into energy carriers ATP and NADPH. NADP+ is an electron carrier. Can take high-energy electrons to other parts of the cell where they are used to perform cell needs.

Steps of Photosynthesis Photosystem II – Light is absorbed by chlorophyll and transferred to electrons. Electron Transport Chain – high-energy electrons from photosystem II move through the chain to photosystem I.

Steps of Photosynthesis cont. Photosystem I – pigments use energy from light to reenergize the electrons. 4. Chemiosmosis – produces ATP as a result of a build up of protons in the membrane.
