One-Step Equations Hooray! Lets learn!

Inverse operations Inverse means opposites Lets start with learning about inverse operation! Inverse means opposite. Inverse means opposites

Opposites Examples of opposites: BIG small HOT COLD Fast Slow

Since inverse means opposite, what’s the inverse of these? Addition: Subtraction: Multiplication: Division: What’s the opposite of adding 9? What’s the inverse operation of multiplying 12? What’s the opposite of dividing 7? What’s the inverse of subtraction 3?

You have been doing one-step equations your whole life and probably didn’t know it! + _______ = How many ice creams are missing? _______

What we do to one side we HAVE to do the same thing to the other side! In your mind you are actually doing this! 2 ice creams + x = 5 ice creams - 2 ice creams = - 2 ice creams x = 3 ice creams X Is the variable Important! What we do to one side we HAVE to do the same thing to the other side!

I have three friends coming over and I have 12 pieces of pizza to split between us. Using one-step equations, how can I find out how many pieces of pizza we each get? The facts: We have 3 people and 12 pieces of pizza. What we want to know: How many pieces of pizza will each person get?

Solve for x What is the inverse operation for multiplication? 3x = 12 3 3 Now we have x by itself x = 4 The goal is to get the variable by itself. How do we do this? By using the inverse of the coefficient or constant.

Practice 26 = 8 + v 15 + b = 23 m – 9 = 13 v – 15 = 25

Keep it up! 6 = 2x v 8 = 2 16 = k 49= 7n 10

Solve for x with integers -42 = 7x n + 4 = -12 b = -6 18 w – 9 = -13

Group work v – 15 = 27

Group work - 15x = 0

Group work n – 8 = -10

Group work v = 8 7

Group - 7 + m = 8

18 + x = 8

60 = 12k

What is the inverse operation?
