A Volunteer for Death

Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

Jesus went to the cross for you as a Volunteer!

I. He went to a Well Known Isolated Location – v1-3 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. A. It was well known to Judas.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. A. It was well known to Judas. 1. Know (οἶδα) = to know by observation. Pluperfect tense implies Judas had been there enough times to know precisely where the Lord hung out.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. B. It was isolated enough for a secret arrest to take place.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location 1. Previously no one dared to arrest Jesus because of His popularity. John 7:32 & 44-46 - The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. . . Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards declared.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location 1. Previously no one dared to arrest Jesus because of His popularity. John 7:25-26 & 30 - At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? . . . At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.

I. He Went to a Well Known Isolated Location So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 2. So Judas led a huge mob there.

II. He Walk Right Up to His Enemies Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” A. He could have escaped if He had wanted to.

II. He Walk Right Up to His Enemies Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” A. He could have escaped if He had wanted to. 1. He knew what was going to happen.

II. He Walk Right Up to His Enemies 2. He had avoided arrest & capture before. Luke 4:28-30 - All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

II. He Walk Right Up to His Enemies 2. He had avoided arrest & capture before. Matthew 26:53 - Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

II. He Walk Right Up to His Enemies Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” B. But - He came right out into the open alone & asked, “Who is it you want?”

(And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” “I told you that I am he,” Jesus answered. “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”

III. He Identified Himself Beyond Any Doubt C. Why should we follow Him?

III. He Identified Himself Beyond Any Doubt C. Why should we follow Him? 1. Jesus is God in Flesh! Colossians 1:15-18 - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

III. He Identified Himself Beyond Any Doubt C. Why should we follow Him? 1. Jesus is God in Flesh! 2. The cross was the only way to forgive our sins! Colossians 1:19-20 - For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

III. He Identified Himself Beyond Any Doubt C. Why should we follow Him? 1. Jesus is God in Flesh! 2. The cross was the only way to forgive our sins! 3. Jesus didn’t go to the cross against His will!

III. He Identified Himself Beyond Any Doubt Philipians 2:5-8 - Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!
