English Colonization

What was England’s motivation for trying to establish colonies in the “New World”? (pgs 43-44) COMPETITION (Sir Francis Drake) FEAR WEALTH GLORY

What were their first attempts like? What happened? Where? (pgs 42-43) Roanoke Island (Disaster… all lost) Jamestown (first “successful” English settlement) 1607. Nearly everyone starved to death or were killed by natives in the first winter… SAVED by TOBACCO (cash crop). 1619 House of Burgesses created.

Compare and contrast the Jamestown colony with the Pilgrims’ Plymouth settlement. (pgs 50-53) Jamestown was a Joint-Stock company chartered by the king. Its primary purpose was generating PROFIT Plymouth was a settlement created by religious separatists fleeing persecution in England (NOT chartered by the king) Its primary purpose was developing their RELIGIOUS community.

What was the extent of England’s colonies by 1680? (pg 54)
