Warm Up #18 What are some examples of nonrenewable resources? What are some examples of renewable resources?

Lesson 1: Energy Resources Ch. 4 Energy Resources Lesson 1: Energy Resources

Essential Questions What are the main sources of nonrenewable energy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using nonrenewable energy resources? How can individuals help manage nonrenewable resources wisely?

How do you use energy resources? Activity In the US today, the energy used for most daily activities is easily available at the flip of a switch or the push of a button. How do you use energy in your daily activities? What are some instances that you use energy during a 24-hr period? What type of energy did you use? How long did you use it?

Sources of energy Nonrenewable resources – resources that are used faster than they can be replaced by natural processes Renewable resources – resources that can be replaced by natural processes in a relatively short amount of time

Nonrenewable energy resources Fossil fuels – coal, oil, petroleum, natural gas Depends on: Type of organic matter Temperature and pressure Length of time organic matter was buried

Nonrenewable energy resources Coal Formation Oil and Natural Gas Formation

Advantages/disadvantages of fossil fuels Fairly easy and direct to change energies Relatively inexpensive and easy to transport Disadvantages – Limited supply Disrupts habitats Causes pollution

Nuclear energy – energy released from atomic reactions

Nuclear energy Advantages – Disadvantages – relatively small amount of uranium produces large amount of energy doesn’t pollute Disadvantages – uses nonrenewable resource uranium can lead to a release of harmful radioactive substances waste materials are highly radioactive and dangerous

Managing nonrenewable energy resources 93% of US energy comes from fossil fuels More than 22% of world’s total energy used in US Reclamation – a process in which mined land must be recovered with soil and replanted with vegetation
