Literary Analysis Notes May 10, 2018

T.A.G. T – title A – author G – genre Use a TAG to clarify what you are writing about and properly cite your source.

Genres Fantasy Historical fiction Horror Mystery Realistic fiction Science fiction > Novel Short story  Fairy tale Play (comedy, tragedy) Poem Biography   Essay   Memoir   Speech

Using a TAG in your writing Sentence Starters: In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a fantasy novel by JK Rowling… Shakespeare’s tragedy, Othello,… Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night,… In a biography of Steve Jobs, written by Walter Isaacson… The horror novel, IT, by Stephen King…

Weaving Quotes into your writing What NOT to do: Do this instead: Don’t write a whole quote without incorporating it into your own writing! Example - “The student of the Talmud, the child that I was, had been consumed in the flames... A dark flame had entered my soul and devoured it.” – Elie Wiesel, Night. This quote shows that Elie has lost faith in God after being in Auschwitz. DO use parts of quotes and weave them into your writing. Example – Elie feels like his past childlike self has been “consumed in the flames” of the crematoriums of Auschwitz (Wiesel 37). He is no longer “the student of the Talmud” that he was because he has lost faith in God after seeing the horrors of the camp (37).
