Today we will learn about Max Weber Today we will do the following: L.O – Learn about the origins of Sociology E.Q – How did Max Weber contribute to Sociology? C.T- Students will discuss in partners and provide an exit ticket answering the E.Q.

Cornell Notes Questions Why did made Weber interested in Sociology? Why does Capitalism Exist? What is Protestantism and what does it have to do with Capitalism? Why should we work hard? What is holy work? How does community vs family affect an economy? Do miracles still exist? Why are some countries struggling and some prosperous? Who changes the world? What is Charismatic Authority? What is bureaucratic authority?

Weber Noticed Changes in his country during the industrial revolution Cities growing Companies were getting huge Aristocrats were being replaced by business elite

About Weber Capitalism came to be because of religious ideas In particular Protestant Ideas. So what is Protestant?

According to Weber Catholics had it EASY Did something bad? Just confess to a priest and your forgiven! Protestants do not get that immediate forgiveness. They must wait until they die to get final judgement from God himself Because of this guilt Protestants will work harder than Catholics in an effort to please God “The Protestant Work Ethic”

Motivated by Guilt While Catholics believe Holy Work is work done at Church/Priest/Monks/Nuns Protestants believe all work can be holy. You can be a baker and honor God You can be an accountant and honor God Chick-Fil-A Hobby Lobby etc.

Family vs Community In Catholic Tradition it is all about the Family Protestants thought that not all family affairs are good Think Mafia Families Cartel Families etc. You should direct your energy to the community as a whole not just your family

No more miracles There are no more ordained millionaires God doesn’t hand pick who prospers and who struggles Prosperity is earned through Honesty Working Thinking methodically

Why is Mexico’s Economy failing? Mexico is traditionally Catholics which means Not guilty enough to succeed Believe in Miracles too much Rather live for now than plan for tomorrow Citizens feel its ok to steal from the community to help their family. USA should not give Mexico any more money, to really help they need to change their culture and way of thinking.

SO what’s next People need change and have evolved from accepting Traditional Authority (Kings/Queens) To Charismatic Authority (Napoleon) To Bureaucratic Authority (People in the know) To make change these days you can no longer get a new leader but rather spread ideas and motivate individuals though statistical analysis, conversation, study of budgets
