Statutory Assessment Tests ‘SATs’ SATs are just part of the assessment jigsaw

What will the SATs tests assess? YEAR 2 Reading Maths Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar will not be tested this year Phonics re-screening for pupils who did not meet the expected standard at the end of Y1

What will teacher assessment assess? YEAR 2 Reading Writing Maths Speaking and Listening This will be completed through everyday activities spent in class

There are only 2 children that require retesting When are the tests? YEAR 2 Anytime in the month of May Phonics re-screening during week commencing Monday 11th June. There are only 2 children that require retesting Assessments will not take place all on one day, a timetable will be drawn up to suit each individual

READING TASKS 2 Assessments Paper 1 - lower demand level reading prompt and answer booklet 30 minutes Paper 2 - higher demand level reading booklet and separate answer booklet 40 minutes Children can not have support with reading tasks. Children will take both assessments Timing are an estimate Assessments can be broken up into several sittings so that your child doesn’t have to complete the assessment all at once, however, if performing well child will be allowed to complete in one sitting Children will take assessments in small groups with myself and Mrs Hill whilst the rest of the class complete a ‘normal’ day in class

MATHS TASK 2 Assessments Paper 1:Aritmetic 20 minutes Assistance may be given to read the questions; numbers can be read but not mathematical symbols Paper 2: Reasoning 35 minutes 5 aural questions read out at the beginning of the test Pupils can not use any equipment to help with their calculations but are encouraged to show their working out. Children take both tests Again timings are an estimate Don’t all have to be sat in one go can be split up into different days or just have a short break in the middle of each assessment

WRITING No test paper Children’s writing will be assessed through a variety of their independent written work. Spelling factors high on achieving the working at expected standard Sentence types factor high on achieving the working at expected standard Handwriting factors high on achieving working at greater depth standard Write coherently For different purposes Narratives, real life events

How will I get my child’s results? Towards the end of the summer term, school will send a report to inform you of your child’s results and progress over the year. YEAR 2 Results of Teacher assessment Reading Writing Maths Phonics (if applicable) Results will be sent home in June once the standardised score and threshold is released by the government.

How can you help ? Don’t stress- We are assessing progress all year remember SATs are just a piece in the jigsaw. Allow your child to read quietly to themselves and then discuss their understanding. APE (Answer, Prove, Explain) Find opportunities for your child to use number in everyday problems. Encourage them to do some calculations in their head. Read more advanced books to them or allow them the opportunity to attempt – Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, Dick King-Smith Provide opportunities for independent writing encouraging them to write extended sentences and include a range of punctuation. Be particular about handwriting. A . , ! ?
