JOSE ANTONIO AGIRRE LEKUBE Biography - Born in Bilbao in 1904 - Member of the EAJ-PNV party. - Mayor of Getxo, near Bilbao. - First President of the Basque Autonomous Government of Euzkadi.

Agirre formed an army and a government The Basque Army managed to mobilize 100,000 soldiers.

Exile during World War II José Antonio Agirre fled to France after the war He and his family escaped the long arms of the Nazis.

Agirre led the Euzkadi Delegation in Buenos Aires.  he went to Uruguay  he set up a big Basque exiles network  he went to France Agirre died in Paris on 22 March 1960 of a heart attack, aged 56.
