Green industries Introduction to Green Industries Program Horticulture Floristry Forestry Landscaping Agriculture

Modern horticulture includes growing and caring of plants, horticulture is part of floristry, agriculture, landscaping and forestry. There are several jobs and skills that are related to horticulture. Jobs are often outside, hands on and require tech and science skills, and creativity. horticulture Hortus means ‘garden’ and cultura means ‘cultivation’. Horticulture means the art, cultivation, or care of a garden. Horticulture is both an art and a science.

Floristy or floriculture Floriculture requires more specialized knowledge and skills as part of the horticulture industry. Creativity and hands on skills are needed to produce ornamental and aesthetic products and services. Some jobs are: florist, designers, grounds keeper, greenhouse manager and technicians. Floristy or floriculture Production, transportation and use of flowers and foliage. Floriculture adds aesthetics (beauty) to our interior and exterior environment using plants, flowers and foliage, and often accessories. Plants are used for medicinal, health and culinary processes.

Forestry job opportunities can include conservation, research, maintenance, education and resource extraction related to the forests or production of timber and non-timber goods and services. Technicians and mechanics that specialize in the operation and maintence of equipment. Product from forests include: timber, lumber, maple syrup and some medicines. forestry the science or practice of planting, managing, and caring for forests. Includes timber and non-timber products in Canada and Ontario Resource industry that is a significant part of our local historical development and economics.

Landscaping requires knowledge of plants their characteristics and care, as well as skills in technology such as design and construction to produce and maintain aesthetic and responsible environments. Jobs include: Landscape Architect, technicians, labour for grounds care, turf specialis, urban planners. landscaping The production and use of plants to make our outdoor and sometimes our indoor environment more appealing.

Agriculture includes several different areas of study and job opportunities, in this program we will concentrate on learning mostly about plant production and harvesting. agriculture Production of animals and plants to meet human needs of food, clothing and shelter. Agriculture developed in our area following the extraction and boom of the logging and timber industry in Algoma and surrounding area. Farming that include crops that are processed or used directly by consumers. Mono or mixed farming techniques.
