What is Anime and Manga? Anime and Manga are part of one of Japan’s largest export “Pop Culture”. A very broad definition used by many American’s is that Anime is like Cartoon’s and Manga is like Comics.

Manga: Definition The word "manga" comes from the Japanese word 漫画, composed of the two kanji 漫 (man) meaning "whimsical or impromptu" and 画 (ga) meaning "pictures“. Based on the definitions of the two composed Manga would mean Pictures of something enjoyable that could only happen in one’s imagination.

Manga: History The word Manga was popularized by the famous ukiyo-e artist Hokusai but, the word was first used in 1798, to describe the picture book Shiji no Yukikai by Santō Kyōden. Picture scrolls of medieval Japan, which combine pictures and text to tell stories or describe events are most similar to modern art. The picture scrolls could only be viewed by an elite audience unlike modern manga which is mass produced. In the late 1800’s another Manga like book appeared Printed in book form using woodblock technology, kibyôshi were storybooks for adults in which narration and dialogue were placed in and around ink-brush illustrations.

Manga: History Continued In 1959, Weekly Shônen Magazine and Weekly Shônen Sunday became the first children's weeklies. The magazines originally being for general education and entertainment. So, originally manga only made up about 40% of the magazine. In the next few years the percent raised to over 50% of the magazine being manga In 1968 Weekly Shônen Jump was founded. In 1980, Jump's claimed circulation was 3 million; in 1985, 4 million; in 1988, 5 million. In 1994, 6,200,000. Was the best selling magazine of any kind in japan

What defines Manga ( Style ) “I manipulated close-ups and angles, of course, and tried using many panel or even many pages in order to capture faithfully movements and facial expressions that previously would have been taken care of with a single panel.” ~ Tezuka “god of Manga”

Manga Style Made for audiences of all ages Comics Made for audiences of all ages Uses more of a cinematic style than Western comics, portraying characters in dramatic angles. structures its scenes frame-by- frame, representing a snapshot of the action and in sync with the dialogue Made for a younger audience Are graphic novels, and as such, the stories and visuals don't necessarily sync with the dialogue and visual action

Manga: Types Manga has many different types of genre’s which is part of the reason it reaches to such a broad audience Action, Mystery, Romance, Comedy, School Life, Seinen, Shoujo, Harem, Shounen, Horror, Josei, Yaoi and Yuri, and Mecha. These are just a few of the many genre’s

Manga: Popularity in Japan Manga sales now account for a third of the book and magazine market in Japan About 2 billion manga are sold ever year (40 percent of all books and magazines in Japan) In 2007, the sale of manga books and magazines stood at around ¥470 billion. Most years about 20 to 30 percent of television dramas are derived from manga.

Manga: In the United States The number of titles released in 2008 was 1,700,compared to 1,008 in 2005 About 60 % of manga readers are females Sales in the United States topped $200 million in 2006, compared to $60 million in 2002

Anime: Definition The word anime is short for animation. Most English speaking countries refer to Anime as Japanese animated cartoons

Anime: History Japan began producing animation in 1917 Originally called “Manga Films”, Japan’s Animation started off with an uphill battle against Disney’s already booming popularity. As anime was starting to be developed in the Great Kantō Earthquake in 1923 hit. The anime industry was forced to start over from scratch.

Anime: History Continued The Start of Tōei Dōga (Now Tōei Animation) in 1956 First Film was Hakujaden (The Legend of the White Snake) Takahata Isao and Miyazaki Hayao, now with Studio Ghibli, began their careers at Tōei Dōga Tetsuwan Atomu: The First Japanese Television Anime Uchū senkan Yamato (Space Battleship Yamato), released as a TV series in 1974 challenging the idea Anime was for kids

What Defines Anime Anime Cartoon’s Distinct facial expressions. Wide variation in physical characteristics, closer to reality. Large eyes and mouth make for a cuter style (Kawaii). Concentrate mostly on life issues or things tied closer to human emotion and has more violent and sexual themes. Characters usually have features that are not relative to the rest of the body and therefore further from reality Generally made to make people laugh and so are more comical.

Anime: Information 60% Of The World's Animation Is Anime (In 2004) Spirited Away has won an Academy Award and is the 2nd top grossing anime film in the world. “Kimi no na wa” (Your Name) is the #1 grossing anime film in the world bringing in $355million in the box office. 7th Top Grossing Animated Film in the World Anime Production Companies produce products for 112 countries (87.2% of the World) “Sazae-san” Is The Longest Running Animated TV Series in the World

Anime popularity in the United States Anime Expo – A convention that can be compared to Comic Con Live Adaptations Space Dandy first anime to be broadcasted in America before Japan (On Toonami) Netlfix and Streaming Sites Media: Youtube, Memes and Gifs, and Social Media Sites

My Thoughts Through my research I gained bounds of information on Anime and Manga that this presentation does not do it justice. From what I’ve learned my opinion on Anime and Manga is that I am surprised at how much it’s grown outside of Japan in just the last few years. I myself 4 years ago was just learning about more than just Dragon Ball, Naruto, Pokemon and other worldwide known Anime. I also realized because of Japan’s focus on detail in art and many other daily activities such as preparing tea, Manga has always been about the detail in art and story which can separate it from fast pace comics.
