About Food Miles Food miles are the measure of the distance a food travel’s from field to plate. Supermarkets have taken over from local and regional markets . Ingredients traveled around the country from factory to factory before they make their way to the shops. 95% of the fruit and 50% of the vegetables in the UK are imported.

How Can I Help Food Miles Buy food when it is in season. Walk to local shops. Buy food with as little packaging as possible. Buy food that is grown locally.

Carbon Footprint A carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact you have on the planet. Made-to do with how much CO2 your release into the atmosphere. The more CO2 you release the bigger your footprint. The bigger the footprint the more damage to our planet. As the world’s energy needs have grown so have our CO2 emissions. CO2 levels are now higher than they have been for at least 20 million years. WE COULD GO INTO AN ICE AGE !

How Can We Reduce our Carbon Footprint? Use energy saving light bulbs which last longer and also use less electricity. When your cold instead of turning up the heating put on more layers of clothing. Turn your electric appliances off at the plug when your not using them. Have showers instead of baths.

Packaging Percentage of Packaged Goods 53% plastic 26% paper board 25% paper 10% glass 7% metal 5% mixed materials

How Can We Reduce Packaging Go to the… Bakers, Butchers or the Grocers because they don’t have as much packaging as a supermarket Or you could… If you went to a supermarket that has plastic bags then you can reuse them when you next time go to that shop.
