Bycatch Mitigation Information System WCPFC BMIS Bycatch info on the web

Outline BMIS - Bycatch Mitigation Information System why it has been developed how it might be useful to you work through the database feedback

Acronyms BMIS – Bycatch Mitigation Information System WCPFC – Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission – “the Commission” WCPO – Western and Central Pacific Ocean RFMOs – Regional Fisheries Management Organisations CMMs – Conservation and Management Measures

Why has the database been developed? WCPFC centralised information on bycatch mitigation and management highly migratory species; tuna, billfish reference and educational tool supporting management responsibilities

Convention text minimize waste and discards catch of non-target species, both fish and non-fish species impacts on associated or dependent species, in particular endangered species promote development and use of selective, environmentally safe and cost-effective fishing gear and techniques protect biodiversity in the marine environment

BMIS Bycatch Mitigation Information System broad audience relevant to similar oceanic fisheries (other tuna RFMOs)

Bycatch seabirds, sharks, marine turtles LL - longline PS- purse seine PL - pole and line TR - troll long lived species, low reproductive rates

Bycatch is costly to fishermen lost baits lost gear handling time handling risk wasteful, risk of fishery closures

Other reasons fisheries closures bycatch and the market for tuna campaign on FADs - UK supermarkets have changed policy on tinned tuna NZ company Foodstuffs changed policy

WCPFC bycatch management responsibilities Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs) Education e.g. BMIS

Useful information for fisheries managers Info on seabird, shark and sea turtle bycatch issues mitigation methods rules and regulations e.g. CMMs background info e.g. ID guides resource to which you can refer others.
