Lesson Two Life in Egypt

Definitions Unified- Upper and Lower Egypt were united to form one country. Menes- led his army north into Lower Egypt, wearing the double crown. Legend says he made a unified Egypt. Manetho- priest who became first scribe or record taker. Pharaoh- Egyptian king.

Egyptian Records Hieroglyphics- Egyptian form of writing based on pictures. Rosetta Stone- Allowed us to read hieroglyphics. Was written with three different languages: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Egyptian cursive. Jean Champollion decoded the stone and solved the mystery of hieroglyphics.

Pyramid Building Pyramid - large stone buildings that served as houses or tombs for the dead. Farmers helped build when the Nile flooded. Mummy- preserved body Giza- site of the Great Pyramid Khufu- pharaoh for whom Great Pyramid was built Pharaohs were buried with all their earthly possesessions.

Egyptian Economy Economy - The way people use and manage resources. Trade made the Egyptian economy more prosperous & profitable. Egyptians went on trading expeditions to Southwest Asia. The Hyksos invaded Egypt & brought new technology including the chariot.

Egyptian Social Structure

New Kingdom Pharaohs Hatshepsut- A woman who became king Amenhotep (Akhenaton) - servant of Aton Tutankhamen (King Tut)– became king at the age of 9 or 10. Sobeknefru – ruled Egypt after the death of her husband.
