Career development Coaching James Hamilton LDR610 Winter 2015 Here is my presentation for the Career Development and Mentoring Class I am taking at SHU

Career Development Though Coaching style Leadership Being a teacher and coach for thirty-five years my career is at a stage where I find myself asking the question “Did I pick the a career that gives my life meaning?” As Reardon states our success in life and our identities are measured by our careers” (2009, p. 2)

Five Keys to Coaching Frequent meetings Improve coaching skills Plan and prepare Provide helpful, constructive feedback Help guide players and coaches with career development During my career I have learned that coaching and teaching are really one in the same. According to Gaines there are five keys to success in coaching. I have used these steps throughout my to some degree or another to become a better coach and teacher. These skills have not only help me to become a better coach, but they have also helped me guided my students as well as my own children.

Building Stronger Teams Through Encouragement Suggesting Sharing Pointing Building a team has many similarities with career development. Both need to be encouragement to succeed. Suggestion of improvement should be accepted as a means of growth upon reflection. Sharing of ideas and plans help both to develop the best plan possible. Teams and a persons career both need to get pointed in the correct direction to be successful. Success is not a singular event but rather a journey.

Leadership using the CASVE model of Career Development Analysis Synthesis Valuing Execution Communication Leadership using the CASVE model of Career Development Communication Analysis Synthesis Valuing Execution This class has introduced me to another way of looking at career development. It is the CASVE model in which career’s are developed through stages in which we progress. Those stages are communication, analysis, synthesis, valuing, execution and then communication reexamined. Let us now look at these stages more closely in career development.

1 2 3 Present job vs. future options What is the right fit for me? Communication Present job vs. future options 1 What is the right fit for me? 2 What path should my career take at this point? 3 In the communication stage it wants us to look at why we are examining our career in the first place. In other words what gap is there between where we are and where we want to be? What guides us to make decisions about our career both internally and externally? And lastly what goals do we have? Having reached a thirty years of teaching and being able to retire and draw my pension if I choose I find myself asking the question should I continue or is there some second career that I would like to pursue? If I do choose to pursue a second career what would be right for me? And what will my career path look like from this point forward? These are question that I will have to answer using this phase of the CASVE Cycle of career planning.

Analysis 1 2 3 Self Awareness – My career path is on-track Coaching seems to be my passion 2 My view effects my daily thoughts 3 The second stage of the CASVE Cycle is to analyze our current career situation. When I look at my current situation I am generally happy about my jobs as a coach and teacher. I find that in all the activities I perform as a coach and working with players to be my favorite part. By looking at myself in the “world of work” I know that how I view the job or duty affects my thoughts and therefore affects my performance. My decision are more positive when I have a more positive outlook . I believe that I am in several places on the CASVE Cycle going in and out of different phases as I make decision about job moves. Like we say in the coaching world, “you never stay the same”

Synthesis 1 2 Part time coaching opportunities Continue to learn creating more doors to open 2 When I started to look at the synthesis phase of career development which is what we done or plan to do to advance our career. It is the brainstorming phase of career planning in where we develop several plans and then decide on the best fit for our goals. In my situation I am a part time coach and full time teacher and could continue to do this. I could retire from teaching and find a new position to supplement my pension or I could continue to teach looking for a full time coaching position that piqued my interest.

Valuing 1 2 3 Family considerations Standard of living Am I getting out of this career the things I need 3 The valuing phase of CASVE Cycle is that part that looks at what is important to us. What priorities do we have that influence our decision about our careers. The thing I value most at this stage of my life is my family. I will not make a decision about my career that would change my current family situation. My children are in college so financial consideration must be made when I make any job related decisions My wife’s job is such that she would no be able to relocate for next five years meaning I would not be able to relocate for the next five years. So when I am making career decisions at this point in my life both location and financial considerations must be examed. The other consideration of any job decision will be what does the job have to offer me, will I feel fulfillment and meaning?

Execution 1 2 What are my needs to implement plan What type or amount of effort do I need to implement my plan 2 Execution phase of the CAVSE Cycle is putting the plan into action. What do you need to do to implement your plan? What effort do you need to expend to make you plan come a reality? I have decided at this point in my career I can continue to teach and coach part time looking for an ideal full time coaching situation. I will have to continue to network and make connections that may lead to this position. Working hard and doing a good job at my current position is also a way that will lead to more opportunities. Every job in coaching I have ever got was always because of my work ethic and the people that I had connected to, I don’t expect the next one to be any different.

Communication 1 2 3 Foster relationships with present employers Outlook on present position is good 2 What is next? That is the question. 3 The last stage of the CAVSE Cycle is to review the communication stage again. This stage helps us to evaluate how we are doing and set goals for where we want to be. My current job as a part time coach has been very positive. My boss has even made the comment “I need more Jim Hamilton’s” in the past. We have discussed the future of the program and a that a full time position may develop. I will continue to have discussion about future opportunities with him while being patient and building a stronger relationship with the organization.

Summary Challenges I still face What are my realistic expectation Roadblocks to personal fulfillment What are my realistic expectation Not shooting too high but not underestimating abilities either Keep my eye on the goal Not done yet, still have many more things to accomplish In summary I still face some challenges as I pursue my ideal job. I am limited by my value of family on the location and finical obligations I must meet. This is not a negative, just a fact. I need to set realistic goals for myself while at the same time not settling for something just because it is in my comfort zone. Last but certainly not least I will need to keep pursuing that ideal job and realize I am only as happy as I choose to be. My fulfillment and meaningfulness of my career up to me an how I look at it.
