Year 10 2013 Information Evening

The Process so far Students have submitted expressions of interest to accelerate. Students have completed application forms to take part in VET. Last term I distributed to all Year Nine students a: Subject selection form Excerpts from the Year Ten curriculum handbook Sheet of paper with student’s individual access code and password for selecting their subjects on line. If students still wish to take part in VET or accelerate it still may be possible subject to numbers in subjects and programs

The Year 10 subject selection process.

Rationale behind the Year Ten Program Students are starting to get more choice Greater opportunity to do more of what the students are good at and where their interests lie Students are still choosing subjects from all Domains, whatever a student chooses they can still do whatever they like in Year’s Eleven and Twelve Opportunity to accelerate into a Year Eleven – VCE study. Opportunity to take part in VET or a School Based Apprenticeship Some students are starting on a pathway to a career.

All students in Year 10 must select subjects from all Domains English – 2 units or two semesters Mathematics – 2 units Science – 2 units Languages – 2 units (optional) PE – 2 units Health – 1 unit SOSE – 1 unit Commerce/IT - 1 unit of each Art – 2 units Technology – 1 unit Year 11 studies, VET or an SBA may be included. Regardless of what students select in Year 10 they can do whatever they wish in Year 11 and 12 except Language, if Language not chosen in Year 10 the students cannot do in Years Eleven and Twelve. A unit = one semester

The previous slide outlines the minimum required to successfully complete Year Ten. This adds up to approximately 45 periods per fortnight. Once the minimum met students may have selected a VCE study, a VET program. Students may then select from Year Ten electives or any subjects from any of the groups. A VCE study often takes the place of the corresponding Year Ten study, e.g. do not have to do Year Ten Commerce if doing Year 11 Legal Studies, Business or Accounting

Mathematics Pathways Year 10 Year 11 Year 12 A Advanced Methods Methods General A Specialist B General General B Further C Practical Foundation My advice to students is to do whatever mathematics you can do for as long as you can

Language Whilst Language is optional in Year Ten we highly recommend students do a Language – Italian or Indonesian. Why: VCE Language is scaled up. Many Universities look very favourably on students who have completed Language. Opportunity to travel. Australia is operating in a global community. Studying Language helps students with their other studies. If studying Language is Year Ten there is the opportunity to continue into Year Eleven, VCE or VET. If taking part in Language in Year Ten the Certificate II in Applied Language will give you a Unit 1 and 2 towards your VCE and a nationally recognized certificate.

The process Two stage process, the students submit a hard copy of the subject selection form and select their subjects on line, the online receipt is to submitted with the hard copy. Tuesday 16th October – House Leader/Student/Parent interviews. No Year Nine classes will run, students are required to make an appointment between 1.00pm and 7.00pm. Interviews are in the Library. Students should have finalised subjects by this date, this is a final step in the process. All selections due by Friday 19th October
