Beleaguer Besiege; attack A group of Greek kingdoms, led by Agamemnon, laid siege to the city of Troy for 9 years. According to legend, the Greeks won the battle by constructing a large wooden horse which they offered to the Trojans as a gift. When the Trojans brought the horse into the city, their fate was sealed, for the Greeks were hiding inside.

Consecrate Didicate In ancient Greece, the consecrated, or sacred place of a god was a temple. One of the most important and famous is the Parthenon, the temple consecrated to the goddess Athena, giving Athens its name as it was a city dedicated and entrusted to her care.

Itinerant Nomadic; wandering from place to place Aeneas: Refugee from the Trojan war takes a journey with other survivors and settles in Italy, ancestor of Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome and of August Caesar.

Negate Cancel; deny When he was invited to dine with the gods, Tantalus stole ambrosia to bring to his people. As penance, he killed his son as a sacrifice. This was displeasing to the gods, so they cast him into Hades where he will eternally stand in a pool of water that recedes when he bends over to drink, and under a tree that grows taller when he reaches up to pluck a fruit to eat. The gods negate his cries for mercy as he wastes away in Hades.

Pervasive Spreading everywhere In Greek mythology, Pandora is the first woman. She unleashed evil into the world by opening a jar/box from which evil spread everywhere.

Recapitulate Summarize When Odysseus arrives in Phaeacia, he is brought before the king. By way of introduction, Odysseus summarizes his conquests in Troy and his journey home.

Succinct Concise (short, terse, abbreviated) Above the door to the Oracle at Delphi, there was a succinct command inscribed: “ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΑΥΤΟΝ” or “Know Thyself.” This encouraged pilgrims to remember their mortality as they approached the Oracle to ask questions. It is from this inscription that Socrates says, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Waylay Accost; stop; approach; hinder In order to waylay her pursuers, Madea chopped her brother into bits as she and Jason escaped from her home city of Colchis with the golden fleece.
