Discovery Presentations January – February 2016

Summative Task Description Goal Use AtL skills to plan, prepare and deliver presentation Role Presenter Audience Classmates Product 2-3 minutes (approximately 250-400 words) Informational presentation Topic must be teacher-approved Visual aids are optional Standards MYP Language and Literature Criterion D: Using Language Objective ii – Write and speak in an appropriate register and style Objective v – Use appropriate non-verbal communication techniques

Why are oral communication skills important? Connection to IB Approaches to Learning (AtL) Learner Profile Communication Exchanging thoughts, messages and information effectively through interaction Give and receive meaningful feedback Use a variety of speaking techniques to communicate with a variety of audiences Interpret and use effectively modes of non-verbal communication Reading, writing and using language to gather and communicate information Organize and depict information logically Collaboration Working effectively with others Listen actively to other perspectives and ideas Organization Managing time and tasks effectively Plan short- and long-term assignments; meet deadlines Create plans to prepare for summative assessments (examinations and performances) Use appropriate strategies for organizing complex information Communicator Use spoken language to communicate ideas and information Risk taker Delivering a presentation to the class requires a degree of risk for most students. Planning Guiding Questions Structure What is your topic? What does your audience already know about the topic? What do you want your audience to learn from your presentation? What are your main discussion points? Introduction General statement introducing the topic Basic information about the topic (who, what, when, where) Overview of key areas to be addressed Main body Main ideas followed by detailed descriptions Conclusion Summarize key areas Add additional information that was not included in the main body

Planning Tips Begin with a bang Include most important information first in the main body Use transitions between key points Use vivid language, statistics, opinions, anecdotes and/or humor to enhance the presentation

Presenting Deliver your presentation as scheduled Evaluate your presentation using the rubric Reflect on your presentation by describing two strengths and two areas for improvement (refer to rubric). Using the rubric, evaluate two classmates and justify your rating.
