Forensic Toxicology

Forensic Toxicology Forensic toxicologists detect and identify drugs and poisons in body fluids, tissues, and organs in matters that pertain to violations of criminal law. Ethyl alcohol is the most heavily abused drug in Western countries.

The Toxicology of Alcohol Alcohol appears in the blood within minutes after it has been taken by mouth. It slowly increases in concentration while it is being absorbed from the stomach and the small intestine into the bloodstream. When all of the alcohol has been absorbed, a maximum alcohol level is reached in the blood, and the post absorption period begins. During post absorption, the alcohol concentration slowly decreases until a zero level has been reached.

The Toxicology of Alcohol Elimination of alcohol throughout the body is accomplished through oxidation and excretion. Oxidation takes place almost entirely in the liver, while alcohol is excreted unchanged in the breath, urine, and perspiration. Breath-testing devices operate on the principle that the ratio between the concentration of alcohol in alveolar breath and its concentration in blood is fixed.

Alcohol and the Law The current legal measure of drunk driving in the United States is a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent, or 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. An implied-consent law states that the operator of a motor vehicle on a public highway must either consent to a test for alcohol intoxication, if requested, or lose his or her license for some designated period – usually six months to one year.

The Role of the Toxicologist The forensic toxicologist must devise an analytical scheme to detect, isolate, and identify toxic drug substances extracted from biological fluids, tissues, and organs. A screening test gives quick insight into the likelihood that a specimen contains a drug substance. Positive results arising from a screening test are tentative at best and must be verified with a confirmation test. The most widely used screening tests are thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and immunoassay.

The Role of the Toxicologist Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry is generally accepted as the confirmation test of choice. Once a drug is extracted and identified, a toxicologist may be required to judge the drug’s effect on an individual’s natural performance or physical state.
