The Great Society President Johnson Escalates the War on Poverty In 1965 came Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the poor. Black Power Malcolm X deepened the division among black leaders. He was first inspired by the militant black nationalists in the Nation of Islam. He rallied black separatism Black Panther party emerged, openly carrying weapons in the streets of Oakland, California
