Objective By the end of this lesson, I will be able to annotate a passage and analyze the central idea to create my analytical summary.

How can I identify the central idea in a passage?

Today we will be taking our CFA. Start on # 26 on the BLUE side of the scantron. Once you finish your exam, turn it in to me, and finish your central idea graphic organizer. If you finish your central idea graphic organizer, turn it in your class basket and use a separate sheet of paper get the Ethos and Pathos handout from the table by the computer cart. Central Idea Definition CENTRAL IDEA refers to what the author’s main point is. Hint: A text can consist of graphs, charts, and pictures. Central idea is NOT the topic of the text. Hint: The topic is who or what the writing is about. Central idea can most often be stated in one sentence.

What helps me understand the central idea? Supporting details : The evidence in the passage that helps you understand what the author’s main point ( central idea) is.

Theme Vs. Central Idea The theme conveys the moral, lesson, message, or what was learned from the text.

Think- pair- share ( 2-3 min) Partner up with a person or two in your group and read the provided paragraph on the next slide. Answer the questions at the bottom of the paragraph together. I will be listening for accountable talk.
