Enhancing Guided Reading Building Firmer Foundations & Improving Individual Assessment

Agenda Review common challenges to reading instruction. Consider current practice in Guided Reading. Explore engaging activities to correspond with Guided Reading objectives. Consider assessment practices.

From the Mouths of Babes... “I don’t have a favorite book. I like video games.” “Books are the best presents to get!” “Our town has a library?” “My dad reads the paper every morning.” “Holes is the only book I’ve ever read.” Why is this a challenge to reading instruction?

Why Guided Reading? 50% of the printed fourth-grade curriculum is incomprehensible to students who read below that grade level (Children’s Reading Foundation). 75% of students who are poor readers in third grade will remain poor readers in high school (Yale University). 50% of American adults are unable to read an eighth-grade level book (Laubach Literacy Action).
