Integrating Education and Training….and Still Teach. Sara Z. Gutting Adult Education Consultant www.sarazgutting.com sgutting@comcast.net

Integrated Education and Training 1. What is one thing you know about IET? 2. List one thing you are already doing in your classroom to implement work readiness and/or career awareness. 20minutes 3 corners around the room and they will rotate to answer the questions. Have 2 flip charts for each question Sometimes its hard to see beyond the big picture and look deeper at the details.

5 minutes Sometimes we only see the one deer…HSE when in reality we need to see both. We know that one will always take priority over the other

So What IS IET?

What Is IET? “…a service approach that provides adult education and literacy activities concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation activities and workforce training for a specific occupation or occupational cluster for the purpose of educational and career advancement” (Final WIOA regulations at 34 CFR §463.35).

It is only called IET when all three are happening at the same time. Three Main Parts Adult Education and Literacy Workforce Education Workforce Training It is only called IET when all three are happening at the same time.

Adult Education and Literacy Workplace Essential Skills 8 Math Practices Instructional Shift

Workplace Essential Skills Reading: understanding materials written in sentences or paragraphs. Document Use: using and understanding labels, graphs, signs and other materials. Numeracy: using and understanding numbers. Writing: writing text or typing on a computer. Oral Communication: using speech to share thoughts and information. Working with Others: interacting with others to complete tasks. Thinking: reviewing information to make decisions. Computer Use: using computers and other technical tools. Continuous Learning: participating in an ongoing process of gaining skills and knowledge.

Math Practices MP1 – Make sense of problems/persevere in solving. MP2 – Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP 3 – Construct viable arguments/critique reasoning of others. MP4 – Model with mathematics. MP5 – Use tools appropriately and strategically. MP6 – Attend to precision. MP7 – Look for and make use of structure. MP8 – Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Instructional Shifts Evidence Coherence Rigor Knowledge Complexity Focus

You Are Already Awesome How many of these do you already do?

Where Do We Start? Know your students. Play to their strengths. What are their career/job interests? Play to their strengths. Integrate training ideas and concepts that they can relate to. Help create their path. Plant the seed Create Career Clusters

Integrating Education and Training Be Prepared Create lessons, activities, and homework that integrate employment skills and career pathways or clusters. Be Structured Have a Plan 6 Step Lesson Plan Warm-ups and Introductions Try incorporating employment/soft skills into your warm-ups and introductions Be Flexible Always be ready to meet the needs of the students

The more structured we are the more flexible we can be. So how do we do all of this?

6 Simple Steps to Success WARM – UP INTRODUCTION PRESENTATION PRACTICE EVALUATION APPLICATION By integrating some sort of lesson plan concept you can easily integrate employment and training skills into a piece of this outline.

Warm-Ups Math Brain Teasers and Story Problems Current Events Newspaper articles, work related story problems Current Events Business Journals have great graphs Thumb Balls 5 WiOA wants higher order and critical thinking skills Have a puzzle maker handout Do Anagrams—using employment and training

In what ways do you or can you integrate workplace skills into your warm-ups in your classroom? Current events, globe game. Or warm up for writing of pros and cons. In my hand I have a job that pays $100,000. How many of you would like this job. What if I told you you would have to move out of state? What if I told you it was seasonal and you only worked about 4 months out of the year? But you would have to work 6-7 days a week during that time with no vacation time. Would you like it?

Introduction How will you introduce your topic? What is your “hook”? Is there a way to integrate workplace skills or career clusters into the introduction of the subject?

The Power of Words

Introduction What does this video have to do with employment skills? Why would I use this to also teach writing? 5 minutes Its about asking the right question

Presentation

Writing/Reading What if…. What’s the difference….. What am I teaching? What is my presentation? How is this teaching both Employement/Career skills and HSE

Math What does the quadratic formula have to do with employment training?

Quadratic Formula Teaches Structure Steps and Sequence Organize Thoughts and information Why is this important for workplace skills? Where might we use these types of skills?

Evaluation What does it teach… Maps, Graphs, and Charts Photosynthesis Reading Literature Integers

Application What is one concept that you will implement immediately in your classrooms?

“Everything depends upon execution; having just a vision is no solution. ~ Stephen Sondheim
