Tanner Dewald Career Project Michigan State Police Michigan DNR

Michigan State Police There duties are to enforce laws, both state and federal. State troopers work in a wide variety of conditions, both in offices doing paperwork and in the field doing traffic enforcement and responding to calls. Working for the state police gives you experience and qualifications needed for advancements in law enforcement careers. Salary is between $41k to $62k per year A college education is not required to be a State Trooper.

Michigan DNR The duties of a DNR officer include enforcing hunting and fishing regulations, enforcing laws on ATV and snowmobile trails, and they also have the power to enforce traffic laws. One fact many people don’t know is that the DNR has more power then any other law enforcement agency in Michigan. They also do not need a search warrant to be on your property.

DNR Average salary for a Michigan DNR officer is between $30k to $80k per year, varying on experience and rank. I found that the best school for me to attend to pursue a law enforcement career would probably be Lake Superior State University. They have the best law enforcement program in the state of Michigan. There working conditions are dependent on the weather, since they are almost always working outside. The Department of Natural Resources require an Officer to possess a degree with a major in natural resources, or in an engineering/scientific area.

College of choice A bachelors degree of law enforcement and conservation biology at Lake Superior State University would cost around $75,000 total for a four year program, which is required by the DNR.

Similarities\differences There are many similarities between these two careers, most obvious of course is that they are both law enforcement careers. Officers of both agencies enforce laws, give citations, and help to keep this a safer, better state. The biggest difference between these careers is that the DNR is more centered around the outdoors, nature, and wildlife.

Career of choice I would prefer a career as a DNR officer because I enjoy being outdoors, and would like to help conserve our forest habitats and wildlife populations.
