ECOLOGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT An Introduction. ECOLOGY  The study of how organisms interact with one another and with their environment (surroundings).
In this unit you will learn about how to: Analyze how ecosystems differ from each other due to abiotic and biotic factors.

Ecosystem Glossary

Organism Any living thing

Individual One single organism Example: Rabbit

Population All the individuals of one kind (one species) in a specified area at one time Example: Rabbits

Community All interacting populations in a specified area Example: bees, ladybugs and flowers

Ecosystem A system of interacting organisms and nonliving factors in a specified area Examples: Forest and pond

Biotic Living organisms and products of organisms Examples: tree, horse

Abiotic A nonliving thing Examples: rock, sunlight

Population density The number of individuals in an area of a specific size. see illustration on page 18 in textbook Population density = 10 flamingos = 1.25 flamingos per square meter 8 square meters

Limiting factors An environmental factor that causes a population to decrease. Some examples are food, water and space.

Carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support.
