Parts and their Functions Microscopes Parts and their Functions
Microscope Instrument using lenses to help us see small objects more clearly
Resolution How clearly an object can be seen The higher the resolution the sharper the image will appear
Magnification Enlarging the image of an object
Total Magnification The number of times the image you are seeing has been enlarged from the original object Total Magnification = Eyepiece X Objective
Optics The lens must be rounded outward (convex) The lens must be a solid The lens magnifies because the light rays enter a small surface, but leave through a larger surface (refraction) The farther the light rays travel the greater the magnification will be
Original Object Enlarged Object Lens Light Rays
Eyepiece Contains a lens with a magnification of 10x The piece you look through
Low Power Objective Lens located on the nosepiece. Magnifies the object 10 times
Stage Large flat piece that the slide rests on
Coarse adjustment Larger knob on the side of the arm Focuses the scanning objective lens by moving the stage up and down
Fine Adjustment Smaller knob on the side of the arm Focuses the low and high power objectives by moving the stage a tiny bit up and down
Light Shines upward through the diaphragm and slide Located on the base of the microscope
Diaphragm Wheel located under the stage Regulates the amount of light that passes through the stage to the slide
High power objective Strongest objective lens located on the nosepiece Magnifies the object 40 times
Scanning Objective lens The lowest power objective lens located on the nosepiece Magnifies the object 4 times
