Presentation transcript:

Key American Victories: World War I TODAY: What was Germany’s goal in WWI? It’s “failed plan”? How is Civil War in Russia going to effect this war? How is America going to impact this war?

1.) Germany’s Plan? Germany’s Plan: Russia being in this war Western Front = France v. Germany Eastern Front = Russia v. Germany Germany’s Plan: Launch major attack on France. Take them out 1st then take over the rest. Russia being in this war was wicked important Why???? Forces Germany to fight on 2 sides Not as strong!

How is Civil War in Russia going to effect this war? 2.) Russia “Peaces Out” By 1917 = major civil war breaks out in Russia Why?  Issues with food shortage & people did not like the government. The people blamed Tsar Nicolas

Key American Victories: World War I So who is going to take over? And what about the War? Vladimir Lenin (Bolsheviks = Communists) = take over. Lenin does not want to waste time fighting a war = he wants to get Russia back in order. Result = Treaty of Brest-Litovsk: March 1918 = Russia withdraws from the war = loses a ton of land to Germany. War ends on the EASTERN FRONT!!!

Key American Victories: World War I What you should of learned TUESDAY? Why does your book call Germany’s WWI plan a failure? Why did Russia withdraw from the war? How will Russia’s withdrawal effect the Allies?

Key American Victories: World War I TODAY: What was Germany’s goal in WWI? It’s “failed plan”? How is Civil War in Russia going to effect this war? How is America going to impact this war?

What is going to happen in WWI now that Russia has withdrawn?

But…JUST IN TIME!

How is America going to impact the war? America Arrives! 1.) ** How do we get to Europe?** U.S.A lead by Admiral William S. Sims (navy) Sims’s Solution: Convoy = group ships together and have warships escort them to Europe. Result = U.S. did not lose any ships carrying troops = increased the number of Ally soldiers. - American brought morale & energy!!

How is America going to impact the war? 2.) Battle Argonne Forest-Meuse River March 21, 1918 = Germany launches major attack France. * 5 units attack = get within 40 miles of Paris! September 26, 1918 = U.S.A goes in to help General Pershing (U.S.A) = 600,000 troops, 40,000 tons of supplies Result = Germans are pushed back off the WESTERN FRONT!!!

Key American Victories: World War I 3.) The End of War (1918) Civil War and Revolution breaks out in Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire causing them to withdraw Germany has lost all it’s allies 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month of 1918 = ARMISTICE (cease-fire)

WWI ends Peacefully? TODAY: From your homework = what were 5 ways Germany was punished for WWI? Why is Germany the only one being punished? Which nations were in charge of dictating the peace agreement?

The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles PEACE? - January 1919 = The “Big Three” - Meet @ Palace of Versailles (France) The “Big Three” = Allied Powers. Great Britain France USA Italy (not considered part of the Big Three) Germany is NOT ALLOWED

Wilson had devised a 14 point plan that he believed would bring stability to Europe. There should be no secret treaties between powers  Seas should be free in both peace and war  The barriers to trade between countries such as custom duties should be removed  All countries should reduce their armed forces to the lowest possible levels  The national groups in Europe should, wherever possible, be given their independence.   Russia should be allowed to operate whatever government it wanted and that government should be accepted, supported and welcomed.  Territory Changes: Germany give up land Italian Frontier adjusted Belgium should be evacuated Poland should be given an outlet Defeated nations should not be made to pay for the war League of Nations - An assembly of all nations should be formed to protect world peace in the future.

The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles Wilson’s Fourteen Points Pts 1-5: Free-Trade, Open Seas, Disarmament…every nation would have to sacrifice and change Points 6-13 = Self-Determination: let nations be free The 14th POINT = Creation of the League of Nations = groups of nations that work together for world peace.

The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles 14pts are REJECTED! = Allied Powers = no way! The Allies think Wilson is being too nice. They Want: 1.) Guilt Clause: Germany to admit that they are completely guilty for everything! 2.) Germany to pay $33 billion in war damages = Reparations 3.) Military broken down and limited 4.) Divide Empires 5.) Created League of Nations This Agreement = Treaty of Versailles

TREATY = Divide Empires New Nations: 1.) Poland 2.) Czech Republic 3.) Austria 4.) Hungary 5.) Romania 6.) Yugoslavia 7.) Smaller Bulgaria 8.) Turkey

The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles The Treaty is brought back to America: USA = REJECTED!! Senate = no way! Senate did not like the League of Nations = too complicated League formed anyway…but without the U.S.

Today you will assume the role of WWI WINNERS Activity Today you will assume the role of WWI WINNERS (well…one of you will be a loser) Obj: Understand how each nation felt at the end of WWI. Be able to explain what each nation wanted out of a WWI peace treaty.

Activity 1.) Every group will get a G.B., France, USA, and Germany 2.) You have 10 minutes to work on YOUR questions (prepare for the showdown) 3.) Then you will meet and discuss what will be included in your group’s peace agreement

Homework = WWI Aftermath MAP (Qs) Activity In your Groups: Pick someone to write Pick someone to present (tomorrow) Complete QA-E & #1&2 = This is the treaty you will present tomorrow Homework = WWI Aftermath MAP (Qs)
