If a circle is cut into wedges and laid out as shown, a parallelogram results. Half of an end wedge can be moved to the other end a rectangle results. The height of the rectangle is the same as the radius of the circle. The base length is the circumference (2∏r). The area of the rectangle (and therefore the circle) is found by the following calculations: Arect = Base x Height Area = ½ (2∏r) x r Area = ∏r x r Area = ∏r2
