IR Diction #2

Theme Theme: the writer’s main message/central idea How do I identify theme? In the text, ______________ (title of text), there are messages about _____________. (identify topics) The message about _____________ (topic) is... EX: In Romeo and Juliet, there are messages about love. The message about love is that it is a powerful and even dangerous emotion that can take over people and even destroy them.

Tone

What is tone? A writer’s (or speaker’s) attitude toward a subject, character, or audience.

Look at the following sentence: “Gaining the attention of his classmates as well as his pretentious teacher, the brave student courageously questioned his professor’s intelligence by challenging him about the difficult textbook.” What is the tone of this sentence?

Look at the following sentence: Gaining the attention of his classmates as well as his pretentious teacher, the brave student courageously questioned his professor’s intelligence by challenging him about the difficult textbook. Tone: admiration/impressed Why? Author’s word choice regarding the student. The author is on the student’s side because the student is described as brave, while the teacher is pretentious.

Change the words – Change the tone. “Drawing the attention of his classmates as well as his well-respected teacher, the demanding student dared to experiment with his professor’s intelligence by interrogating him about the widely- used textbook.” Highlight the words that help you determine the tone. What is the tone?

Tone: critical/disapproving “Drawing the attention of his classmates as well as his well-respected teacher, the demanding student dared to experiment with his professor’s intelligence by interrogating him about the widely- used textbook.” Tone: critical/disapproving Why? Author’s word choice regarding the student – author is on the professor’s side because the student is described as demanding while the teacher is well-respected.

Narrative assignment – Unit 2 EA1 Drafting Time Hawk Hour – next Tuesday – will give you an opportunity to finalize/revise your narrative. Narrative is DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY, 9/19!!
