July 2007 Patent Policy Questions were raised by members on the patent policy. They were directed to consult with David Law (PatCom chair) and their legal counsel. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Call for Essential Patents July 2007 Call for Essential Patents Does anyone know of any patents of which the chair should be made aware, the implementation of which is either technically or commercially essential for either mandatory or optional portions of the standard, and for which a letter of assurance has not been submitted? No notice of essential patents was announced by any member. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Study Group Policies Everyone may participate July 2007 Study Group Policies Everyone may participate Anyone may participate in debates and discussions Anyone may make or second a motion Anyone may vote on a motion Please identify yourself and your affiliation The first time you speak during each meeting slot If you feel like some others may have come into the room that need to be informed If anyone requests your affiliation information Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

July 2007 Why are we here? In 2004, the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying WLAN equipment to the “Wi-Fi Multimedia” (WMM) specification. WMM was drawn from an early draft of 802.11e WMM evolved independently from 802.11e WMM has derivative specs dependent on it, e.g. WMM U-APSD Most everything being sold with QoS capabilities is certified to WMM Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Why are we here? In 2005, IEEE SA approved 802.11e July 2007 Why are we here? In 2005, IEEE SA approved 802.11e 802.11e is a superset of WMM, with technical differences 802.11e is now incorporated in 802.11-2007 (the standard) All new 802.11 amendments are made to the material in 802.11-2007, e.g., 802.11n, 802.11r New amendments increasingly diverge from what is being built and certified Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

July 2007 Why are we here? It can’t be good for the industry to have to develop two specs for the same functionality One spec as the “official” standard, an amendment to 802.11 One spec as the “unofficial” standard, an amendment to WMM We need to converge on a single specification that is acceptable to both IEEE and WFA Alignment of the two organizations is the best path for the industry Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Areas not to be touched Anything not in the scope of WMM, e.g., HCCA July 2007 Areas not to be touched Anything not in the scope of WMM, e.g., HCCA Anything 11n is referencing, built on DLS 4 transmit queues Per channel access QD2 (PICS) Advertisement (capabilities), preserving the structure Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Areas to be addressed 07/1986r0 – Comparison of 802.11e and WMM July 2007 Areas to be addressed 07/1986r0 – Comparison of 802.11e and WMM Areas in conflict between the two specs – in detail Block ACK Aggregation Backward compatibility with WMM 1.1 U-APSD and the More Data bit U-APSD behavior Admission control Sequence numbering Information elements Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Straw Poll Scope statement format July 2007 Straw Poll Scope statement format 15: Only specific areas to be addressed 4: Only specific areas not to be addressed 15: Specific areas to be addressed and specific areas not to be addressed 7: Specific areas to be addressed and a general statement to include experience gained in WMM (with derivatives) 7: Specific areas to be addressed and specific areas not to be addressed, plus a general statement to include experience gained in WMM (with derivatives) 25 individuals voting Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Call for Essential Patents July 2007 Call for Essential Patents Does anyone know of any patents of which the chair should be made aware, the implementation of which is either technically or commercially essential for either mandatory or optional portions of the standard, and for which a letter of assurance has not been submitted? No notice was made by any member present. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

July 2007 Scope Straw Man This amendment incorporates some functionality from the Quality of Service specification developed as the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) specification version 1.1 into the standard. This amendment does not deprecate any operational mode or feature introduced in 802.11e-2005 (or affect the compliance of devices adhering to 802.11e-2005). It is specifically limited to incorporating functionality addressed in the WMM specification and the specification of behavior that is required to define operation with this new functionality. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Straw poll on Scope statement (one vote per choice) July 2007 Straw poll on Scope statement (one vote per choice) 17: Acceptable without the “compliance” stuff 20: Acceptable with the “compliance” stuff 1: Don’t like it at all Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Straw poll on Scope statement (vote as often as you like) July 2007 Straw poll on Scope statement (vote as often as you like) 22: Acceptable without the “compliance” stuff 27: Acceptable with the “compliance” stuff 4: Don’t like it at all Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Motion Moved: to approve the following scope statement: July 2007 Motion Moved: to approve the following scope statement: This amendment incorporates some functionality from the Quality of Service specification developed as the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) specification version 1.1 into the standard. This amendment does not deprecate any operational mode or feature introduced in 802.11e-2005 or affect the compliance of devices adhering to 802.11e-2005. It is specifically limited to incorporating functionality addressed in the WMM specification and the specification of behavior that is required to define operation with this new functionality. Moved: Myles/Hart Result: 25/14/7 Fails Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

Additional Information Section July 2007 Additional Information Section Intent is to not necessarily incorporate all of the WMM specification. Intent is to not deprecate existing functionality incorporated in 802.11e. is not allowed to invalidate existing device compliance with 802.11e and will not deprecate any operational mode or feature introduced in 802.11e-2005. Deprecate is understood to mean that functionality is not part of the standard, might continue to be described in a standard for backward compatibility, and its further use is discouraged. Deprecation is effectively removing something from the standard. Specific areas addressed are differences in all information elements, unscheduled automatic power save delivery (U-APSD), sequence numbering, and admission control. This amendment does not address the hybrid coordinated channel access (HCCA), extended distributed channel access (EDCA), or direct link setup. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
