Figure 1 Mechanisms of metastatic growth in the heart Figure 1 | Mechanisms of metastatic growth in the heart. Haematogenous seeding involves invasion of the tumour into local capillaries. Lymphatic spread occurs when tumour cells invade into lymphatic capillaries and travel to the heart through contiguous lymph channels. Direct extension usually occurs with malignancies arising in organs adjacent to the heart, in which case the tumour grows into the heart itself. Venous extension occurs when the tumour invades into a large systemic vein, and migrates to involve the right heart by way of the vena cavae. Maleszewski, J. J. et al.
