AIMS Understand how injuries can be prevented by identification of risk factors. OBJECTIVES: Understand the two classifications of injuries. To be able to list injuries for each classifications.

INTRODUCTION Injuries can be classified into two basic categories: Traumatic injuries Overuse injuries What is the difference?

TRAUMATIC INJURIES These injuries suddenly occur An individual will feel the immediate effect of the injury. May be in the form of pain, swelling or an open wound. Traumatic injuries is divided into two catergories.

TRAUMATIC INJURIES Two categories- Extrinsic and Intrinsic Extrinsic – caused by an external force. Intrinsic – no obvious cause present, or stress occurs within the individuals body.

TRAUMATIC INJURIES Give examples of 5 different sports where traumatic injuries may occur Identify what these injuries could be Could the injuries be avoided? How What’s the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic traumatic injuries?

OVERUSE INJURIES More subtle Appear as gradual increase in pain. Associated with a particular activity Common in endurance and individual skill sports.

OVERUSE INJURIES TISSUE INJURY Rest = Recovery OVERLOAD INFLAMMATION CONTINUED ACT PAIN INFLAMMATION Rest = Recovery

COMMON Elite athletes age 20-30 Norm population 30-40 Onset two years of chosen activity

SUMMARY Two classification of injury Traumatic Intrinsic – stress within the body Extrinsic – outside force Overuse Gradual increase in pain.

Group Task Research the 5 most common injuries in your sport and complete the following; Identify under the heading of Traumatic or Overuse Further divide in intrinsic or extrinsic injuries. Under each injury given, could it have been prevented and if so how. Complete as a short presentation to the group for next week.
