Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!!! Who likes grilled cheese? I love them because they are fast, easy, and come on – who doesn’t love bread and cheese.

In order to make any food dish – you need a recipe In order to make any food dish – you need a recipe. This is a recipe I use for my grilled cheese. 2 slices of bread + 3 slices of cheese → 1 grilled cheese sandwich A recipe tells you the amount of each ingredient needed to make the your dish – just like a chemical equation.

Recipe = Chemical Equation CH4 (g) + 2 O2 (g) CO2 (g) + 2 H2O (g) Just like in a recipe, the coefficients are used to tell you how much of each reactant are needed to make your product(s) .

Stoichiometry Process that allows chemists to predict the qualitative and quantitative outcomes of a chemical reactions. Qualitative: quality (Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance) of the substances – can be observed. Quantitative: quantity (mass, length, temperature, volume) of the substances – can be measured.

What does that mean? Stoichiometry identifies: Quality of the reactants & products: color of ppt, odor emitted from the reaction, heat produced, color of reactants prior to reaction Quantity of the reactants & products: mass of reactants, number of reactants needed, number of products made, mass of products.

Stoichiometry process Use of dimensional analysis to CONVERT between reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Using conversion factors: Avogadro's Number (6.02x1023 particles) Molar Volume (22.4L) Molar Mass (grams) Mole Ratio (use coefficients)

Lets make it about our grilled cheeses  2 slices of bread + 3 slices of cheese → 1 grilled cheese sandwich How many sandwiches can I make with 4 slices of bread and excess (plenty of) cheese? 1. Identify how many slices of bread you have: 4 slices 2. Identify how many slices of bread you need to make the number of grilled cheese the recipe makes: 2 slices bread = 1 grilled cheese 3. Use this as a conversion factor to find the number of grilled cheese you can make. 4 slices bread 1 grilled cheese = 2 grilled cheese 2 slices of bread MOLE RATIO
