Major Organs Structures of the cardiovascular system include the heart, blood vessels, and blood.

Function The cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting nutrients and removing waste from the body. What kind of nutrients need to be transported? What kind of gaseous waste is made in the body?

The Heart and Blood Flow Oxygen poor blood flows in from the body through a vein and is held in the right side of the heart ( It appears to be the left on diagrams, but think about it from the organism’s perspective). Why is the blood oxygen poor? What happened to the oxygen? Blood flows from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen. Oxygen rich blood enter the left side (looks like the right on diagrams), where large muscles pump it out the body through arteries.

Blood Pressure The force with which blood pushes against the wall of an artery

What can impact blood pressure? Poor diet Increased cholesterol= PLAQUE in the blood vessels INCREASES BLOOD PRESSURE DECREASES BLOOD FLOW Smoking Constricts blood vessels SLOWS BLOOD FLOW

BLOOD FLOW High viscosity = low flow(syrup) Low viscosity = fast flow DO YOU WANT HIGHLY VISCOUS BLOOD?

What can impact blood pressure? The immediate effect is HIGH PRESSURE. WHY? Exercise Strengthens blood vessels, increasing cardiovascular health overtime.

Plaque can build up in your arteries causing disease. What effect does increased plaque has on blood pressure? Arteries and veins are elastic. What effect might a loss of elasticity might have on blood pressure? Increase in blood pressure is the immediate effect of exercise. Why is exercise considered to be an essential component to a healthy heart?
