Science Starter (Week 12, Day 2, 4/19/16) If you take a can of soda and put it in the freezer, what do you expect to happen? Predict the products. NaCl + F2  ? How many particles are there in 16 moles of Strontium? What is the formula for magnesium bromide? If the half-life for Ra-216 is 5 hours, how much of a 100g sample will remain after 25 hours?

Agenda Science Starter Intro to Matter Diffusion Demo KMT Exit Ticket

Unit 6: Gas Laws Kinetic Molecular Theory

Matter Matter is made up of or composed of particles (atoms, molecules) Particles VERY, VERY small Have mass and volume Mass to volume ratio (density) is different depending on substances

Diffusion of a Gas -Raise your hand once you smell! What makes the smell travel across the room? What do you think that looks like on the particle level? DIFFUSION: the spreading of particles to fill the space they are given

Demo: Diffusion of Liquids Date Put this in your notebooks

Demo: Diffusion of Liquids Date Eye Level: Describe how the dye spread in the hot water. Describe how the dye spread in the cold water. Particle Level: Now put your descriptions into pictures ON THE PARTICLE LEVEL. Initial Final HOT COLD

Answer these questions Write in complete sentences but do not copy the question Discussion: How is the smell spreading across the room similar to what causes the dye to spread out in the water? How did temperature (both hot and cold) affect the diffusion? How does adding heat affect the particles and how they move?

Video: Eureka- States of Matter. (http://www. youtube. com/watch

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Gas particles… are moving constantly and their movement is random. bump into each other and that collision affects how and where they move. The collisions transfer motion and energy When heat energy is added to a system, the temperature AND speed of the particles increase.

Diffusion Applet http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/states-of-matter Let’s see how a gas particle moves

Matter never stops moving, even as a solid. Consensus Matter never stops moving, even as a solid. “Molecules” (little lumps of matter) in a solid are constantly attracting and repelling each other and this holds a solid together.

Consensus As matter heats up, the molecules move faster. As matter cools, molecules slow down. “Molecules” (little lumps of matter) in a liquid slip and slide past each other so they are shapeless/ not rigid. When a solid melts, the molecules become disorderly (lose their shape)

Consensus When molecules evaporate (change from a liquid to a gas), they pop from the surface of the liquid and become invisible vapor. When molecules condense (change from gas to liquid), they become more dense and packed together.

Expansion and Contraction: Matter heats up  Moves faster  EXPANDS (Takes up more space) Matter cools down  Moves slower  CONTRACTS (Takes up less space) Thermometers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCQVTTKu0Xc
