Meet the Teacher – Kimberly Glenn 7th and 8th Grade Language Arts 1st Year at Centennial 20th Year as an Educator I’m married and my husband is also a teacher at Perry High School in Chandler. 7 children, 3 are adults (Kelly, Emily and Tammara). Raven and Leila are Juniors at Mesa High. Andrew and Ryan are Freshmen at Gilbert High. We have 8 animals, 4 dogs, 2 cats and 2 geckos. I love to read, hang out with my family and quilt. Trade Book Reading Purpose: Regular ELA Requirements: To engage and motivate students in learning things they care about To promote a love of reading To build vocabulary: reading a lot exposes students to new words and ideas To build knowledge about the world (through both fiction and informational text) To build reading “stamina”: the ability to read harder text for longer periods of time Regular ELA Requirements: Weekly Reading =15-20 Minutes Daily Comprehension Checks = Every Other Week (Quizzes/Logs) Assessment = Once a Quarter (Plot Maps/Summary, Book Reviews, Projects etc.)

Daily Grammar Practice BELLWORK: Daily Grammar Practice allows all students to see how all grammatical concepts connect at the sentence level and thereby impact writing. Daily Activities: M = Parts of Speech T = Sentence Parts W = Clauses and Types of Sentences Th = Capitals and Punctuation F = Diagramming

Focused Notes Essential Question – Question that we are trying to answer with our notes Notes – Information that the teacher provides you through power point, text, videos, etc. Cue Column – Completed after notes are finished, used to document main ideas/key points, vocabulary words, questions that need to be answered or could be on a test Summary – Short 2-3 sentences about the notes and should answer the Essential Question Review your notes daily. Frequent, brief reviews are better for comprehension than trying to cram the night before a quiz/test.

Homework Completion of unfinished classwork Assigned text activities Daily reading of book Trade book assessment once a quarter. Final drafts of writing assessments 1-2 times a quarter.

A Formative Assessment (quiz) measures PROGRESS toward proficiency Grading Weighting 80% Assessment – Formative and Summative 20% Practice – Classwork and Homework Assessments Given by all 7th grade ELA teachers for consistency Reassassements allowed after meeting prerequisites A Summative Assessment (test) measures PROFICIENCY A Formative Assessment (quiz) measures PROGRESS toward proficiency

Re-take Policy/Test Corrections Students should come prepared day of test with all completed work from the assigned selection They may use completed work as a reference for the test (AZ Merit strategy) They have one class period to finish the test. Extra time will be evaluated on an individual basis. In order to re-take(make test corrections) students must: Have packet completed on day of test A minimum of 75% of the assigned work must be done Meet with teacher during office hours to review test Re-take must be within one week of original test date

What about 4th Period? Core 4th Period will be an extension of CORE classes: math, ELA, science and social studies. An example schedule for 7th/8th grade will be: Monday 4th period = 2nd/1st period class Tuesday 4th period = 3rd/3rd period class Thursday 4th period = 6th/5th period class Friday 4th period = 7th/7th period class Students will use their CMS Agenda to monitor the rotation of 4th Period Core classes for each week. (NO 4th Period on Early Release Wednesdays)
