INTRODUCTION TO HINDUSTAN LEVER LIMITED

Hindustan liver ltd. JIPM Awards Dadra and Amli villages near silvassa are home to the two personal products factories of HLL. Dadra unit production capacity 5000 tonnes per annum. Amli unit production 18000 tpa. Amli and Dadra factories were set up in 1996 and 1997. Changing time has been drastically reduced to 25-30 minutes. Senior workers does not know how to adjust a particular machine . HLL’S Sumerpur factory has demonstrated outstanding performance in cost cutting.

HUL IN INDIA

TPM Total productive maintenance (TPM) originated in Japan in 1971 as a method for improved machine availability through better utilization of maintenance and production resources. Whereas in most production settings the operator is not viewed as a member of the maintenance team, in TPM the machine operator is trained to perform many of the day-to-day tasks of simple maintenance and fault-finding. Teams are created that include a technical expert (often an engineer or maintenance technician) as well as operators. In this setting the operators are enabled to understand the machinery problems, righting them before they can impact production and reduce costs of production.

Why has the TPM programme at HLL overshadowed all other programmes such as TQM? Cost cutting Provides gleaming floors. Clearly marked areas for placing raw materials and finished good inventory. Sealed areas for polluting substances.

T.P.M is the only business initiative resulting in returns that are 8-12 times investment

How do you think HLL would have overcome barrier created by trade union during the introduction of TPM in the organization ? Build trust : Typically Indian factory situation there is always feeling of misunderstanding between Management and Trade Union. So as management HLL have to develop trust in the mind of worker then only they can achieve their goals.

2. Training : HLL have to provide proper training regarding new machine. Also have to take some training classes

3. Outsourcing third party manufacturing : HLL have to stop outsourcing third party manufacturing, because this create competition within group factories.

4. Suggestion : HLL have to take some suggestion from worker before taking or purchasing new machinery, finally workers are going to work on it. For e.g.. Team of employee are sent to the manufacturer of the machinery to suggest design, some changes according to unique requirement.

5. Motivation : HLL have to motivate the employee by giving some monitory incentives, coz TPM resulting in returns that are 8 to 12 times the investment and the question comes in the mind of workers that … “what would the workers get in returns if the productivity is increase”

Q. 3. Deviating from the norms of JIPM may result in HLL getting disqualified for the JIPM awards in the future ? Give your views Yes, deviating from the norms of JIPM may result in HLL getting disqualified for the JIPM awards in the future … because JIPM contributes to the creation of beautiful environment and a healthy society, guiding enterprises along the path to better manufacturing with a constant focus on the creation of true value. Their research regarding the publication of plant-maintenance standards, basic surveys and research regarding TPM technologies And if HLL deviate from JIPM may result disqualified in future … and might be also decrease productivity ..

Conclusion As per our discussion based on Hindustan Lever Limited(Now Hindustan Unilever Limited) We conclude that every organization should have to introduce TPM ( Total Productive Maintenance) to increase their productivity and profitability
