Why Students Like WISH “WISH has helped me recognize how important it is to be responsible for my own learning.” “Independent study has helped me become comfortable with school and has motivated me to be a better student. I have learned to how to manage my time more efficiently.” “Independent study made education much more fun because I can learn at my own pace.” “WISH has allowed me to deeply think and fully understand what is being taught.” “WISH helped me a lot because of the one on one time with the teacher.” “I would recommend the WISH program to a person who is a hard worker; it’s not for procrastinators—don’t put the work off.”

History, Purpose & Program 22-year program concurrent with the opening of WHS. For students to work independently with the support of a teacher and parents or guardians. Voluntary program, based upon approval. Students meet one-on-one with their teacher for 15-minute appointments per subject for instruction, submission of completed work, and to review upcoming assignments. Expect a minimum workload of 4-6 hours per subject, per week. Computer/on-line access required. WISH Resource Center, P104 (computer access available). Same school rules and testing requirements apply to WISH students. Students must always carry current class schedule.

Course Administration and Grading Policy Course Format: Weekly independent assignments. Weekly Meeting with Instructor: It is essential that you see your teacher every week. Missed meetings can result in dismissal from program and return to regular classroom instruction. Course Grading: Grading on a 4 point scale. See Course Administration and Grading Policy. Attendance: Attendance is based on the percentage of work completed each week. If all work is finished, you will receive full attendance credit. Absences due to incomplete work will result in a reduced grade and/or credit. Exams: Per Windsor High School policy, all Independent Study courses include a final exam, presentation or project each semester.

How to Succeed in W.I.S.H. Communicate with your teacher—in person, by phone, text and/or email. Use the library Attend all meetings Turn in all work ON TIME!! Parental Involvement Use all your resources, including tutors if needed

Home Component Organize your study area Get help from parents and/or tutors Make a study plan to spread workload throughout the week Parents, know your son or daughter’s WISH meeting time—please schedule any appointments (doctor/dentist, etc.) outside of this. All student assignments are written on their weekly assignment sheets. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your teacher!

Master Agreement Contract between Students, Parents and WUSD Copies provided Continuation in program based on student success each grading period

Next Steps Complete/turn in Master Agreement. WHS students pick up your class schedule at 7:30 tomorrow morning, Thursday, August 17th on the WHS quad. See your counselor if it needs adjustment. North Bay Met/Big Picture Learning students should get their schedules in W100. Elementary and middle school students should contact Mrs. Langhals. See or contact your WISH teacher once you have your class schedule during one of your free blocks this week. It is your responsibility to make contact with your teacher to schedule your regular appointment and get your first assignment. Any questions?
