Hot Glue Gun Safety Training

Introduction Hot glue guns are used by Museum staff to quickly fasten different materials together with a reasonably strong bond. Hot glue guns are safe to use, however, the heated nozzle and the glue itself become very hot (380oF) — certainly hot enough to burn a careless user. On the following slides are safety guidelines that must be followed when using a hot glue gun at the Museum.

Hot Glue Gun Parts

Safety Guidelines Follow all manufacturer’s operating and safety directions. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment: Eye Protection Clothing that hot glue won’t penetrate – long pants and sleeves Closed toe shoes Keep the work area clean, organized and well lighted. Before plugging the glue gun in, perform a visual inspection of the power cord to be certain it is not cracked or damaged.

Safety Guidelines Be careful to avoid direct skin contact with hot glue and the heated nozzle. When setting a glue gun down, always be certain it rests securely on its stand (do not lay the gun on its side). Glue will slowly drip from the heated nozzle when the gun is not in use, keep a sheet of non-flammable material under the heated nozzle (commercially made, flexible, mats can be purchased at craft stores). Never leave a glue gun unattended when plugged in or hot. Always allow glue to cool before handling or attempting to remove it. Before putting a glue gun away, allow it to cool completely.

Injuries It is a good practice to keep a small, stable, container of water near the work area. If hot glue comes into contact with skin…DO NOT PULL THE GLUE OFF… immediately place the affected area into the water until glue cools. Remove the glue when it is cool. Minor burns can be treated by placing the burned area under cold running water. Always take injuries seriously, even a minor burn can become infected. Always report injuries to your supervisor immediately! In the event of a serious injury, call 911.

Hot glue guns are useful tools, allowing a variety of materials to be rapidly and securely attached to each other. The use of glue guns is relatively safe, however, the potential for a nasty burn is present. Following the previously listed safety guidelines will reduce the chances that an accident will occur. End
