Romeo and Juliet Key scene 2 and 3 Date: Objectives Examine the Balcony Scene and the Fight Scene. Be able to write a essay describing either of these scenes. Examine the themes of love and hate. Be able to add points from this scene to a larger essay about themes. Warm–up – I see, I think, I wonder. Write three sentences about this picture.

Today’s scenes: The Balcony Scene and the fight The following scenes are the most important in the play. The Balcony Scene is part of the ‘Rising Action’. It gives the REASONS why everything happens in the play. When asked to discuss a scene in a play, students often choose this one because they can explain who Romeo is, who Juliet is and what the play is about; love. The fight scene is the ‘Climax’ of the play. It is the RESULT of what the characters have chosen to do. Students choose to discuss this scene because they can explain the entire story as well. They can talk about Romeo and Juliet’s secret relationship and what the play is about; hate and the family feud. Football comparison. The first scene here is ‘running the pitch’, the second scene is the goal.

Act 2, Scene 2 Theme: Love The love between Romeo and Juliet is the central theme of the play. From when they first meet till the end of the play, all they can think about is each other. The intensity and secrecy of their relationship lead to serious problems for both of them. Answer the following questions (P.Q.E.) to show ‘Love’ in scene two. How does Romeo describe Juliet? What stands in the way of Romeo and Juliet being together? Juliet worries about their love being like the moon or like lightning. Examine one of these comparisons and explain it. What arrangements to the couple make for the next day?

Quotes to help – Investigate who said these quotes “What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!” “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.” “O, swear not by the moon, th’inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb, Less that thy love prove likewise variable”.” “It is too rash, to unadvised, too sudden; Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be” “If thy bent of love be honourable, Thy purpose marriage, send word tomorrow ”

Act 3, Scene 1 Theme: Hate Masculine pride is important in this play. To be a man, a person hates and fights. Love is effeminate; something that makes you a woman. This attitude is what kills Mercutio and Tybalt and dooms Romeo. Answer the following questions (P.Q.E.) to show ‘Hate’ in scene one. Examine how Mercutio talks to Tybalt and show evidence that he hates Tybalt and wants to fight him. Explain Romeo’s attitude to Tybalt when they meet? How does Mercutio feel about Romeo’s passive or loving response? Who is Mercutio angry with before he dies? What does Romeo believe love or Juliet has done to him? Does he hate Tybalt after Mercutio’s death? Who hates Romeo for killing Tybalt?

Quotes to help – Investigate who said these quotes “Make it a word and a blow” “Here’s my fiddlestick. Here’s that shall make you dance” “Tybalt, you ratcatcher ... Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives”. “I do protest I never injured thee But love thee better than thou canst devise” “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission”.” “A plague a’both your houses! They have made worm’s meat of me.” “Thy beauty hath made me effeminate And in my temper softened valour’s steel” “fire-eyed fury be my conduct now” “Romeo slew Tybalt. Romeo must not live”

Homework Read the following and any notes about: Act 5, scene 3, The final scene; the ending.
