5 GEARS CONNECTIVITY LEADER ESSENTIAL Welcome to the Leader Essentials Series - today we are looking at the art of Connectivity - Why some succeed and others disconnect. As always our goal is applied leadership learning - there are insights available today that will change the way you lead in every area of your life.

THE GEARS 5TH GEAR 4TH GEAR Focus Mode - Task-Centered, fully focused and moving quickly 5TH GEAR Task Mode - Multi-tasking; working hard in various ways 4TH GEAR Walk through the 5 forward gears, using the vocabulary on the slide. I’m 4,5,1,3,2 - take time to explain how you reached that conclusion and get one other member of the team to share theirs. (Ideally someone with a different wiring!). Ask everyone to reflect on their own leadership and rank their comfort with each gear. Make sure they write it down, it makes everyone engage. Then ask them to get into 2’s or 3’s and share with each other their gear preferences. This makes it real, it earths it in their own experience. WHAT IS YOUR GEAR ORDER? Important to understand that we are now talking about unhealthy gears. The most common are getting stuck in work mode - 4 and 5. Workaholism is getting stuck in 4 and 5, driven by either a need to achieve (Thinkers) and fear of not doing enough or letting people down (Feelers). Burnout is unhealthy 1st gear, it’s where we suffer breakdown emotionally and physically. We are not recharging, we have crashed and just don’t want to engage with anyone or anything. 3rd gear and 2nd gear are not really stress gears, they are only accessed in health. Share your own experience using the vocabulary / get other team members to do the same, invite feedback from the room where people are prepared to share their story.

6AM - Wake 1st & 2nd gear 7AM - Drive 8AM - Work 1st gear 12PM - Lunch MASTER YOUR SETTING 6AM - Wake 7AM - Drive 8AM - Work 12PM - Lunch 1PM - Work 5PM - Drive 6PM - Dinner 8PM - Family/Personal 11PM - Sleep 1st & 2nd gear 1st gear 4th & 5th gear 3rd gear (maybe 4th or 1st) 1) Transitions are called Neutral - it’s an intentional decision to change gears. We don't connect because we don't choose the right gear at the right time! 2) Neutral Language - Gears are objective not subjective! It creates a context for healthy conversation. Rather than saying you’re always working! Your spouse can say honey we are in 2nd gear!! 3) Use Trigger Points allow us to be "Intentional not Accidental” i) Homecoming? What happens to your cell phone when you get home?? What do your children experience? Is it the “stiff arm” as you finish the call or arms wide open, hey Daddy’s home! Choose a spot 5 minutes from home, end conversations transition into 2nd Gear! When you make the shift see what happens in your family.  ii) How do you prepare for a meeting at 4pm on your schedule? Are you still completing emails? (I’ll be with you soon!). Set your alarm for 3.58pm and transition into 3rd gear"Great leaders are Intentional not Accidental"  Your influence goes up when you win in the transitions. CONNECTING WELL Space Optimum Size Primary Purpose Intimate 2 - 3 Accountability Personal 6 - 12 Apprenticeship Social 20 - 50 Training Public 70+ Teaching RELATIONAL AND INFORMAL Walk through the content of the slide and explain the challenge of connecting effectively in each space and each Circle of Influence. There are a lot of variables at play and it requires conscious competence! None of us are naturally good at connecting in all 4 Spaces, we all have preferences related to our personality. You can’t use your preferred style of communication in every space, it leads to disconnection. Share your own space preferences - where do yo find it easiest to connect? Explain why, bring the slide to life with personal stories. Mine is Social / Personal / Public / Intimate. I dislike the discipline and structure required for Public space! I struggle to listen well so intimate space requires conscious competence. Individual exercise - Ask everyone to rank their space connectivity preferences. Get them to share their preferences in 2’s and 3’s to really bring the learning to life.   The Obama analogy is powerful, he is an incredible orator in public space but struggled to connect in social space when he visited schools, he wanted to read from a tele prompter and it didn’t connect. BRINGING EFFECTIVE CHALLENGE POWER OF THE MEDIUM MEDIUM BRINGING EFFECTIVE CHALLENGE TEXT MESSAGE 10% EMAIL 15% Liberators know how to effectively calibrate High Support and High Challenge. Understanding how to bring challenge is an art not a science because every individual is unique. However there are some principles that will prove helpful. Text Message and Email never work! They are wonderful for sharing information or encouragement but will be constantly misinterpreted when you use them to bring challenge. In the drive for efficiency it’s easy to fire off the email! The more challenge you are bringing the more essential you do it face to face. People need to see you to truly feel what your saying.  Passive Aggression causes us to fire email! BEING INTENTIONAL LEARNING HOW TO SHIFT Where are the most important learning opportunities for you right now in relation to Connectivity? Get everyone to write down the 3 key takeaways from the session so far. Introduce the CORE process - Know Yourself to Lead Yourself.
