(b) Explain how enzymes function as catalysts. Standard SB1~ Students will analyze the nature of the relationships between structures and functions in living cells. (b) Explain how enzymes function as catalysts.

Standard: SB1b Explain how enzymes function as catalysts. Purpose: To understand the relationship between enzymes and reactions.

Unit Vocabulary Properties of Water Macromolecules Enzymes Acid Polymer Active Site Base Monomer Buffer Lipid Catalyst Polar Molecule Carbohydrate Exothermic Hydrogen Bond Nucleic Acid Endothermic Surface Tension Protein Activation Energy Capillary Action Macromolecule Substrate 6 Properties of Water Disaccharide Lock & Key Model Solvent Polysaccharide Cellulose Chitin

Enzymes Special PROTEINS Act as biological catalysts Substance whose job is to speed up the rate of a chemical reaction The specific location where a substrate binds on an enzyme is called the active site.

HOW ENZYMES WORK

Enzymes Act by lowering the activation energy of the reaction Are very specific with respect to the reactions that they will catalyze… They will only catalyze one specific substance because they actually bind with that substance in a unique way

Energy & Reactions The activation energy is the minimum amount of energy needed for reactants to form products in a chemical reaction. This reaction is EXOTHERMIC and heat energy is released. The energy of the product is lower than the energy of the reactants. This reaction is ENDOTHERMIC and heat energy is absorbed. The energy of the products is higher than the energy of the reactants.

For each of the following letters you are to: ABC’s of Biochemistry For each of the following letters you are to: 1. label the page with the letter and the term, 2. draw a related picture, 3. Give an example/ definition, or answer the perspective question. Be creative and make making your book. Use your imagination to display the ABC’s of classification.
