Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Room 23! December 9, 2016 Language Arts Word Study This week we started a new theme: Community Workers. It was a great review for our social students unit. We read the story, What Do I Want to Be? and talked about different community workers and how they help our community. We also learned the new comprehension strategy, sequencing. This is a tough concept for students to understand, but they did pretty well! We will continue practicing this skill next week. We also learned three new vocabulary words: workers, services, assist Our high frequency words (HFW) this week are: every, live, ask, first, after Please review these with your child at home. **Please check my notes on your child’s reading circle ticket and organizers and read them to your child if he/she cannot. This will also give you an idea of how his/her writing is. Word Study This week we continued practicing the short /e/ sound. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /e/ sound. We also practiced making words from the –et and –ed word family. This was our last short vowel to learn! We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. They are: get, red, was, they Important Dates Dec 14: Town Construction 1:35-2:20pm Dec 15: CHOP Spirit Day Dec 16: Gingerbread House Supplies due *Check-out sign-up genius for items that can be donated! Alternates for the week: Science In Science, we learned all about evaporation, snow, and thunderstorms. All of the students can’t wait for it to start snowing! We even created our own thunderstorm in class! Ask your child to tell you how! Town Construction If your child would like to have specific supplies to decorate his/her town building with, please make sure these are sent in with him/her to school by Monday. We are completing the buildings on Wednesday, December 14th! Gingerbread Supplies On the handout I sent home, it says that each child should bring icing. I have decided that because many of these could get wasted, I created a sign-up for only 12 icings on the sign-up genius so students can share. You do not need to send in icing with your child unless you signed up to donate. Please check-out the sign-up genius I emailed earlier this week and consider donating something for our gingerbread house construction. Thank you to the parents that already signed up! Math As Chapter 7: Numbers to 20 is coming to a close, we continued to practice place value, learned how to compare numbers using the phrases greater than or less than, and identified and extended number patterns. Please review increasing decreasing number patterns with your child as this was difficult for some of the students. For example, 12, ?, 16, 18. Students should recognize that the pattern is increasing by 2 and be able to fill in the missing number. We also played jeopardy to review everything that we’ve learned so far. Lunch Menu Next Week Monday: Chicken Nuggets Tuesday: Nacho’s w/ beef Wednesday: Mac & Cheese Thursday: Chicken Patty Friday: Mickey’s Pizza Alternates for the week: B) Pizza C) PBJ D) Hummus Bites E) Chicken Salad
