The Department of Agriculture By Susan & Eliana Honors Government Period 1 4/18/05

What is the Department of Agriculture responsible for? Finding solutions to problems that affect America everyday, such as: Protecting crops and livestock from pests and disease. To improve the quality and safety of all agricultural products. To determine the best nutrition to people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

To sustain the soil of the U.S. and other natural resources. Insure profitability of all farmers and processors. Keep costs down for consumers. Provide research support to all the other agencies.

Who is in charge of the Department of Agriculture? A member of the President’s Cabinet made up of all the federal departments, the Vice President and the Attorney General. The person who is now in charge of the Department of Agriculture is Secretary Mike Johanns.

What are the 5 ways this department affects our lives? It protects the crops and livestock from diseases and pests. It insures the quality of all agricultural products that meet or exceed the department’s standards to distribute to the public. It helps other departments aware of the Department of Agriculture's responsibility.

It also helps prices to be at their lowest for all other agricultural products sold. Most of these agricultural products are good for us in terms of our health.
