The Role of the Engineer in Society? Engineers, by the very nature of their work, have a responsibility to society. In this role, they have extensive professional responsibilities and they have to address ethical dimensions of engineering problems, designs, and interactions. Students of engineering should graduate with experience in working in teams, have strong written and oral communication skills, and be well-versed in the economic, social, environmental, and international context of engineering professional activities. Duties (Responsibilities) of an Engineer Toward Society and Nature Toward Employer or Client Toward Profession and Their Colleagues Toward Themselves «Engineers accept using science and technology for the benefit of humanity as the basic principles of professional activities» Özlem BIÇAK, Hacettepe University

Responsibilities of an Engineer-Society&Nature Use their professional information and expertise for protection of safety of society, health and cultural heritage. Protection of nature and environment, environment-friendly practices are the integral parts of thier professional responsibility; they give special attention to savings of energy and natural resources They do not discriminate religion, language, race, religion, gender, geographical separation, they approached with respect to different cultures; everyone in the community fair, honest and act in good faith. If they conclude that the work required from them is a serious danger and their professional judgment on this issue is not taken into account by the clients, they refuse to obey their instructions unconditionally. Engineers explain their views, reports on technical matters related to society after fully examined with fair, accurate and objectively. In the process of upgrading the country's technological capabilities, they take necessary precautions for understanding the tecnology by the community and the possible negative consequences of misuse. They protect and develop health and safety in the workplace carefully and without any delay. For taking the necessary measures, they can be compelling, practitioner, educators and in solidarity. Responsibilities of an Engineer-Employer/Client While giving professional service, they carefully consider their reliability, they keep to the oral and written agreements and they expect the same sensitivity from the other side. During any type of professional services, they work in proper standards considering the public safety, health and welfare at the highest level, being careful not to jeopardize. In ways that affect their business relationship; they do not accept directly or indirectly, any gift, money or services or the job offer; and they do not offer to others; do not make political donations in order to develop professional relationships. They do not tell others any commercial and technological secrets of their service to the real or legal persons of the society without permission unless they form a definite danger to the environment, do not use for personal gain. Responsibilities of an Engineer-Profession and Colleagues They continue to their professional activities, in a manner of wining the trust of all his colleagues and carry a maximum of paying attention to the profession's reputation. They approach to all colleagues with respect, behave honestly and fairly. Are not in unfair competition with their colleagues. They make a special effort for the development of younger colleagues, they help them. Show respect to copyright and original works; they meticulously avoid from showing the work of others as their own work. They aim and accept as principle producing service only in their professional areas; they may ask opinions of other officials which may affect their services; they encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. They may transfer their professional duties, powers and responsibilities to the competent colleagues, but only when it is inevitable. They work within a framework of professional duties, powers and responsibilities recognized for them, they use only the official title and titles which they gain rigths. They make an effort to participate actively in professional organizations, support them, contribute to the profession's development. They do not help those who act contrary to "Principles of Professional Conduct", do not show tolerance to them, do not take part in the activities and warn; will, in collaboration with the professional organizations in this regard; they support of all the forces acting in accordance with these principles. Responsibilities of an Engineer-Themselves They continuously improve their professional knowledge and culture. With regard to professional activities, they take into account the honest and objective criticism of his colleagues, and they do not avoid to criticize themselves if it is necessary.
