Warm Up: Dissolving

Warm Up: Dissolving What does “dissolve” mean? What kinds of things dissolve? What do things dissolve in?

Dissolve Dissolve: to make a solution of a substance by mixing with a liquid Example: to dissolve salt in water

Mixtures and Solutions Notes Mixture Molecular View – Particle Diagrams

Introduction to Mixtures and Solutions Video: The Science of Macaroni Salad Video Link

Mixture Mixture: two or more different substances that are mixed but not combined chemically The chemical identities of the substances are not changed.

Solution Solution: a uniform mixture of two or more substances *Uniform meaning the solution has only one color, one texture, and appears to be one substance.

Colloid Mixture where the particles are uniformly distributed but not chemically bonded. Normally opaque (not see thru) Substance that consists of particles dispersed in another substance that are too small to see. Milk, fog, mud

Suspension Mixture where the particles of the individual substances are big enough to see.

Concentration Concentration: the amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of mixture How concentrated do you like your hot chocolate?

Concentration

Draw a Particle Diagram Kool-Aid Molecular View Imagine that you could see the Kool-Aid particles at the molecular level…

Draw a Particle Diagram Kool-Aid Molecular View Draw a diagram of the particles of Kool-Aid and water when: 1. Right when the Kool-Aid powder is added 2. After you have stirred the mixture together.
