Different ways that water mixes with different substances Properties of Water (How water behaves) Different ways that water mixes with different substances

Chemistry of Water Did you know that water…. covers 75% of the earth. is essential to all life forms. makes up about 60% of your weight. is a very small molecules.

Properties of the water molecule 1. water is a polar molecule It has a positive and negative side Oxygen has a greater electronegativity than hydrogen. (it pulls harder on the electrons)

A. Cohesion is the attraction between water molecules 2. Hydrogen Bonds – the negative side of one water molecule attracting to the positive side of another A. Cohesion is the attraction between water molecules Surface Tension Capillary Action Surface Tension

B. Adhesion is the attraction between water and a different substance C. Heat capacity It takes a lot of heat to break through those hydrogen bonds…so water can absorb a lot of heat

3. Water Mixed with other substance a. Solution is a mixture; the particles are dissolved and evenly distributed throughout the liquid Solution Solvent – dissolves the solute Solute – gets dissolved

Salt dissolving (ionizing) in water

Emulsion is a mixture of two unbendable liquids Suspension is materials in water that DO Not dissolve , but do separate into tiny particles Liquid medicine Blood Muddy water Emulsion is a mixture of two unbendable liquids Oil and water
