Causes: The rise of dictators (Germany, Italy, Spain, USSR, Japan) Economic Depression Britain and France Appease Germany and Italy U.S. takes the policy of Isolationism Violation of the Treaty of Versailles (no military, Rhineland, Anschluss, Sudetenland)
Start of the War 1st Hitler invades Poland with the USSR Hitler goes north to take Denmark Hitler Invades France by cutting through Belgium (France falls within months) Hitler takes the Balkans and attempts to take Britain
Important Moments in the War Battle of Britain- nightly bombings by the Luftwaffe- the RAF is able to hold them back. Churchill states that Britain will NEVER surrender, Hitler caves after months of no success. Operation Barbarossa- Hitler's plan to attack the USSR from the Balkans- Soviets use Scorch-earth-policy and retreat until they can regroup Italy is struggling in taking North Africa from Britain so Hitler Sends Erwin Rommel to help they have success until Operation Torch
US Involvement Neutrality Acts- US to remain isolated Cash and Carry- only sell weapons Lend- Lease Act- We will send weapons to USSR and Britain even if they cant pay Atlantic Charter- Sets the terms of the UN and US support for the Allies Pearl Harbor- Japanese's attach US military on Pearl Harbor- US declares WAR
Turning Point Battles Midway- in the pacific, US decoded Japans plan and goes on the offensive Operation Torch- Montgomery and Eisenhower invade North Africa and take it back from Axis powers Stalingrad- Millions dies but USSR prevailed- blocked in Germans and they froze and starved Operation Overlord (D-Day)- Invasion to 5 beaches in Normandy France Battle of the Bulge- Germanys last attempt to win the war
Allies Win the War V-E Day Dropping of the 2 atomic bombs leads to Japan’s surrender V-J Day
Holocaust Nuremburg Laws- Laws that revoke Jews Citizenship Ghettos- Jews were relocated into Ghettos Concentration Camps- relocation camps that later became “Death Camps”
