Entrance Ticket: What Would You Title Chapter 4? Take out your Homework from last night Who would like to share with us What did Bud do to Todd? Why did he do it?

Find the entrance ticket Resource 4.1: What Would You Title Chapter 4? In your groups take a few minutes to discuss and write down a few notes on What happened in Chapter 4. Now, lets look at our entrance ticket together, if I had to complete this for Chapter 3, I would title it “The Shed” because most of what happens in the chapter happens in the shed. No go ahead and Complete your entrance Ticket and Find a great title for chapter 4.

Learning Targets Read the learning targets with me: “I can explain how the author’s word choice affects tone and meaning in the novel.” “I can determine the meaning of figurative language in Bud, Not Buddy.”

Interpreting Figurative Language in Bud, Not Buddy Take out the Figurative Language in Bud, Not Buddy graphic organizer (from Lesson 2). Remember this example from Lesson 2? Example of figurative language (from the text) What this means literally How this language reveals Bud’s feelings? (tone) “He started huffing and puffing with his eyes bucking out of his head and his chest going up and down so hard that it looked some kind of big animal was inside of him trying to bust out.” (p. 10)

In your groups, complete Chapter 4 Figurative Language Resource 4. 2 In your groups, complete Chapter 4 Figurative Language Resource 4.2. and to analyze the figurative language examples and fill out the Figurative Language graphic organizer.

Selected Response Questions Take out the Selected Response Questions, Chapter 4 of Bud, Not Buddy. All the questions are from an excerpt of the text on page 32. Lets Review the questions. Notice how, each question has multiple parts: The first part of the question asks you to identify the meaning of a word. The second part asks you to consider how that word choice affects the tone or meaning of the text. Open your copies of Bud, Not Buddy to page 32. Follow along as I read from “I can’t all the way blame …” to “… didn’t have to put up with Todd.”

Discussion of Selected Response Question Look more closely at Question 4. Think-Pair-Share What are the two feelings he has, and what does this tell us about Bud?” How does this moment in the novel help us understand human beings more?”

Homework Read Chapter 5 of Bud, Not Buddy. Identify the rules Bud refers to in the chapter and add to the Tracking Bud’s Rules graphic organizer. On a separate sheet of paper identify any details in the text that help you think about what this rule means and how Bud uses it.
