Regional Disparity Measures is a way to measure regional cohesion Definitions (1) Regional Disparity Measures are an indicator of how different regions are within a country or within Europe High disparities mean that regions are very different: some are developing faster and some are lagging behind Low disparities mean more cohesion Regional Disparity Measures is a way to measure regional cohesion 2/3-Oct-2008 Regional Disparity Measures in Labour Markets

Definitions (2) “Dispersion rate” is the coefficient of variation (CV) of employment rates or unemployment rates, weighted by the regional population “Underperforming regions” are regions that have a relative high unemployment rate or a relative low employment rate Relative high unemployment: > 150% of the national rate Relative low employment: < 90% of the national rate 2/3-Oct-2008 Regional Disparity Measures in Labour Markets

Methodological aspects Weighted CV means that the size of the region is taken into account. each regional rate is multiplied by its relative size Data aspects: registered data is used to break down LFS data if and only if NUTS 3 LFS data is not available 10 out of 27 MS are based on registered data This is 46% of all unemployment and 44% of all employment Type of UPR indicators: after identifying the UPR regions, the number of regions, the percentage of UPR regions and the percentage of population on those regions are computed 2/3-Oct-2008 Regional Disparity Measures in Labour Markets
